Know What You Stand For: How Your Personal Platform Creates Confidence

Aaron Tippin was a country music artist in the 1990’s who had a hit with the song You’ve Got to Stand for Something. The chorus of the song simply stated:

“He'd say you've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything

You've got to be your own man, not a puppet on a string

Never compromise what's right and uphold your family name

You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything”

Tippin was onto something with this song. He was right, you’ve got to stand for something. Standing for something creates confidence, conviction, and the line in the sand that says this is what I believe in.

Here are some of the amazing things that come from having a personal platform:

You make an impact- When you are convicted and take a stand on something, you are going to make an impact. Whether it’s by volunteering, donating, or working directly to make change, your impact is certain. Taking a stand and having a platform creates confidence. From standing up for those who can’t champion themselves to creating a new and better way to do something, making change creates confidence.

People know who you are- When you stand for something, people know who you are. They know you are the champion for X or that you are the guy or girl who loves rescuing puppies. Your stand creates character and people with character are respected and seen as leaders.

You think beyond yourself- Thinking beyond yourself and your needs deepens your connection to humanity. Thinking beyond yourself tames the ego and raises your social conscience. Knowing that the world doesn’t revolve around you makes you more tolerant, more grace-filled, and more forgiving.

Here are some of the amazing ways you can create a platform:

Look at what you naturally want to protect- Everyone has their ‘thing’- that thing that keeps them up at night or stops them in their tracks when they see the injustice. What’s your thing? From helping survivors of childhood abuse, to ending poverty, to freeing the oppressed, you have something that resonates with you.

Get involved- Once you identify and commit to your cause, find a way to get involved. From volunteering to starting a non-profit, there are unlimited ways to get involved. You don’t have to know it all or run the show to make an impact. Start small and do what your heart commands and allow the path to unfold.

Get some moxie- “Fortune favors the bold” is often quoted to motivate people to do more. Being bold and having grit requires some moxie. Get in there and get your hands dirty. The act of digging deep - especially in the face of opposition - creates a determination and confidence that is forged through the fire.

Fail- The best way to build confidence is to fail. Fail fast, often, and hard. Then get back up again and go back at it. Failing reduces the fear of failing by erasing the fear of the unknown. Usually, failure isn’t as hard as the anticipation of failing. Failing leads to resilience and building the resilience muscle is the key to having moxie.

I had to rely on my own strength, work ethic, and moxie from a very young age, and I knew deep within my heart that I didn't want anyone else to feel the fear, shame, and unknowing that I went through. I didn't know my life would take the direction of teaching, blogging, and coaching others until I heard the God Whispers that would lead me to explore and expand my reach with this online forum. Knowing who you are comes from many things - one of which is standing for something, and I believe we all have gifts to share to help others...including sharing the gift of healing from past failures, abuse, or shame. The effort it takes to stand up for something creates confidence and makes an important impact on everyone you meet; we have the power to inspire and encourage others. I invite you t find your cause, stand your ground, and enjoy the confidence you cultivate.

Until next time...

Cheers!

Lisa
