Finding support when change is too much isn’t a sign of weakness or any sort of failure on your part. Some changes are just too big to navigate on your own. Some change is so overwhelming that it requires more than a positive attitude and willingness to go with the flow. It requires:
- A support group
- Therapy
- Coaching
- Medication
- And more
When There’s Too Much Change Too Fast
Sometimes you’re just beginning to settle down from a big change and another one comes in a gigantic wave. Managing the first change was one thing, but another is just too much, too soon. It’s okay to take a break to catch your breath. Here are some options for taking a moment when life is too hectic:
Change priorities: You may need to change your priorities for a season while you manage an abundance of change. It’s okay to start or stop something while you navigate change. Some things you are engaged in may have to be moved to the back burner for a while until you are back on your feet. Prioritizing your schedule and your commitments can help you feel less overwhelmed and more in control.
Get some help: You may need some help during this time. From a sitter to a lawn service, you might need some outside providers to help you while you figure things out. Finding the right help for the right task can help you focus on what matters most until things even themselves out again.
Let some things go: Intense change has a funny way of teaching you what is truly important. Trying to hold onto everything during immense change can be too much. Be willing to let some things go for the bigger picture. Sometimes doing so creates a maturity and resilience you didn’t know you had.
Get professional help: Unlike a sitter or a lawn service, some change that is too much, too fast needs another form of professional help - psychiatric. If what you are going through is over the top and unlike anything you’ve had to manage before, it might be time for a therapist, counselor, coach, and even medication. An evaluation can help get you on the right track and getting the help you need.
If the amount and intensity of change is too much, there is something you can do. You can make short-term adjustments in your life that will provide long-term coping skills. You can rearrange your situation to help you cope and get the support you need.
