The Secret...the One You Stick With

What's the secret to a successful life? That's a question that you must answer for yourself, and once you do, it's essential to design a plan...to develop action steps that allow you to live an Intentional Life of success.

I've often defined success as 3 major elements:

  • Practicing forgiveness and loving of all...including yourself
  • Living a life of meaning and purpose
  • Giving back to your community

It took me many years to come up with this definition of success and even more years to live it. As a child, I didn't have the parental figures to help me connect the realities of authenticity, beliefs, or values. I didn't have the family to teach me what forgiveness, love, loyalty, or what the meaning of life might be; however, the dysfunction, abuse, and neglect helped me use adversity as fuel to survive, to thrive, and to succeed.

The secret that I discovered as a child...it's the plan you stick with that leads to success. Let me give you an example using the philosophy of A House With Four Rooms to visit the Physical Room daily for complete wellbeing.

What's the best workout program? Is it one that will give you the biggest biceps in the shortest time? One that focuses on improving movement and preventing injury? Or one that is fun and enjoyable?

That last one was on the right lines but really the best training program is the one you stick at.

At the end of the day, even a completely useless training program will get you stronger and fitter and closer to where you want to be. Even if you're just doing press ups and pull ups with no rhyme or reason – that's better than nothing. And actually it's better than a professional training program full of mesocycles and rest periods and splits… because you're actually more likely to do it.

Set Yourself Up to Win

One of the worst things that can happen with a training program is that you fail to stick to it and get disheartened. If you give up after the first week this doesn't just put you back at square one – it puts you at square one with additional guilt and disappointment. And that in turn means you're less likely to stick at your future goals – if you even have the courage to attempt them!

In other words then, the most important thing to think about when starting a new training program is to make sure that your goals are achievable so that you can keep making progress and keep winning.

And one of the best ways to do this is to keep your goals small.

Matt Mullenweg is the founder of WordPress and he says that when he wanted to get into shape, he started by deciding to do just one press up a day. This is a guy who is pretty well known for his 'systems' approach to thinking and this is a very logical way to start exercising.

There is no way you can talk yourself out of doing one press up a day and it's something everyone can do.

But by giving himself this goal, Matt would find he'd often end up doing more press ups. And he'd feel a sense of achievement for having done them.

What's more, he got into the habit of exercising.

Discover, Design, and Develop a System for Success

This is one of the Stepping Stones of A Pilgrimage to Self...Kaizen: the act of continuous improvement. When following this strategy, whether for developing a training program for physical health, learning new skills, or designing an Intentional Life, you'll continue to make progress towards your ultimate goals.

To be successful at starting a new health regime, you need to be successful. In order to learn new skills, you need to be successful. In order to design an Intentional Life, you need to be successful.

And being successful all starts by writing goals that are highly achievable so that you're setting yourself up to win and not setting yourself up to fail.
