Does Fear Have You Shackled?

 Does Fear Rule YOUR Life?

Fear is a sure enemy of success and can create havoc in your life if you let it shackle you from making progress. Fear has the power to hold us back in so many ways if we let it. Fear has become a factor in holding back progress for many people, and if you are at a crossroads in your life...fear can hold you back. It can dictate what action, if any, you take. For many of us, we’ve allowed this emotion to keep us from trying something new, taking a risk, or enjoying an opportunity. Check out these ways to push past it and take control of your life so you don’t let fear rule your life.

Know Your Purpose

Having goals set in place for your life can help you to overcome fear because you’ll have a road map for where you want to go. Goal setting is a major PATH in my lifestyle coaching program because it’s easier to push past insecurity if you have a specific destination in mind; members have specific action items every week, but they also have a specific personal focus goal that they make progress with. It's so important to take time to write down your goals and define your purpose in life. Having direction and knowing what you want from life is a strong motivator for progress.

Take Baby Steps

We often think we need to accomplish things in big ways...it has to be all or nothing. That’s not really the case, though. Often, you’ll find more success when you take baby steps to overcome your fears. Do just one small thing toward reaching your goal, and you’ll soon find you have the confidence to keep going. In A Pilgrimage to Self Lifestyle Coaching Membership, we practice kaizen...the art of taking small, continuous steps forward to make progress towards our goals.

Challenge Your Fear

People don’t challenge fear often enough. You can do this by examining the worst-case scenario. What’s the worst thing that could happen if you try? How likely is it that will happen? Would it be the end of the world if that event actually occurred? The answer is probably that you’d survive even your worst fear, so make an effort to take a risk and challenge yourself. You have probably heard, "If you keep doing what you've been doing, you'll get the same results."

Talk It Out

Sometimes, talking to friends, a coach, mentor, or others who have done what you want to do is the best way to overcome your fear. Encouragement and support are great motivators when it comes to stepping out of your comfort zone. Realize that you don’t have to face everything on your own and recruit some inspiration from your network. A major benefit of our coaching program is accountability...you don't have to take the journey alone.

Reward Yourself

Finally, promise yourself a reward for when you accomplish your goal, despite the fear. You can even set milestones and give yourself a treat for each one passed. Reward is a powerful motivator for success for many of us. Just knowing you have something to look forward to will help you to push past the fear. I've told my clients for years to "Just do it anyway." You might surprise yourself on how much you can achieve!

Give these suggestions a try the next time you need to push past your fear. The more you do it, the easier it will become.

Until next time...

Cheers!

Lisa
