Socializing Without Breaking the Bank

How to Save a Little Bit of Money When You Go Out

Going out with friends to be social and to enjoy new activities is an important way to make sure that we are getting the most out of life and really enjoying ourselves. Money is there to be spent and if you never socialize because you're worried about the financial implications then you're somewhat missing the point.

But that's not to say that you can't save money on your outings. Many of us will regularly spend a good $30-100 on a regular basis on nights out with friends whether those are nights out drinking in clubs, meals out, or trips to the theatre. When you're struggling to make ends meet, a social life can take quite the toll and this might then be a ripe target for making savings.

With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the ways you can start saving money on your social activities. You can still go but by making just a few tiny tweaks to what you order, where you go etc., you can actually save a large amount of cash. That's kaizen in action!

Top Tips for Spending Less On Meals Out

For meals out, the following can save you money:

  • Get a glass of water instead of an alcoholic drink
  • Order a coffee instead of a desert
  • Avoid starters – or offer to share one with someone
  • Suggest cheaper venues
  • Go somewhere that is offering a discount or that accepts vouchers
  • Enjoy the early bird specials

For Going Clubbing

For nights out drinking and dancing…

  • Drink prior to going out
  • Order large pitchers so that you can all share and make savings that way
  • Or alternatively, try going teetotaling for a night!
  • Do some prior research to learn the cheapest taxi company in your area. This can make a big difference. Uber is a fantastic app for this if your area supports it.
  • Don't take your card – only take cash to avoid spending more as you drink.

For Other Activities

  • Remember, you don't always have to 'do something'. Sometimes having a tea or potluck your house is enough.
  • Many other activities are free, from a walk in the park to a bike ride, to a look around a free museum.
  • Look on voucher sites to find cheaper options for things to do.
  • Choose times to meet up that will be less expensive where possible.
  • Host an old-fashioned games night.

There are so many ways to socialize and have fun without breaking the bank. Finding that perfect partner to share conversation, a walk, and coffee can be the most delightful way to spend your time.

Until next time...

Cheers!
