Life of A Minimalist

When I first heard about minimalism I thought of art, interior design: maybe one black vase, one black table, with solid white walls in a living room.  I thought of minimalism as being plain and even frugal.  It wasn’t until I went on my very own discovery to becoming a minimalist that I actually found out what it was.

Minimalism is a personal experience.  It is so much more than art, interior design, and wearing a monochrome colored shirt.  It is a way of life.  It is the act of de-cluttering.  Have you ever watched the show, “Hoarders”?  Many people hold onto things that they have become attached to.

Those people who are hoarders had something traumatic happened to them and they attribute those things they hold onto as their coping mechanisms.  They hold onto material things because they fill a void of some sort.  When the mind is cluttered it will always show up on the outside.  A physical environment is a reflection of an internal emotional, and/or mental environment.

I recognized this very same reflection in my own life when I was overweight.  I was about 168 lbs. standing at 5 ft. 4 inches at the time.  I realized not only was I storing toxic waste in my fat cells, but was literally a body hoarder that was holding onto what no longer served me.

I used to buy a bunch of things that I thought would fill a void and as a way to ignore those subconscious traumatic thoughts of my past. It did not help. I found that I was still unrested because my mind was cluttered.  It took a severe decline in my health to make me realize that I have to do something.

I started eliminating junk foods, processed foods, sugar-filled foods, fried foods, and foods rich in oils from my diet.  I allowed my body to cleanse.  I wrote down what I was eating to keep track of my progress and to stay dedicated to this detox I was allowing my body to have.

During this process, I also did some journaling and evaluated what I did not need anymore.  As I was elevating in my health, I no longer resonated with the person I used to be.  My clothes no longer matched my new personality so I started giving them away.

I discovered my love for all things, black, white, and grey, with a pop of earth tone in my clothing.  These spectrums of light I call them brought me and still bring me a lot of peace.  I feel clarity.  Throughout this journey to becoming a minimalist, I was able to cleanse my negative thoughts, memories, lose 46 lbs., and create my life around my peace.

Living the minimalist lifestyle is about being your authentic self, honoring your truths, and being aligned with your spirit. I buy what I need and if I want to get something it is out of pure love of myself, and not to fill a void.  The minimalist lifestyle is about leaving what no longer serves you and inviting in what makes you feel the most peaceful.  It encompasses the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of you.

I want to hear from you!  Would you live a minimalist lifestyle?
