Learn to Respect & Value Yourself

Learn to Respect & Value Yourself

Being bold and assertive is a wonderful thing when it comes to earning the respect of others. Before you can earn their respect, you’ve got to respect yourself. You can’t give away what you don’t possess. You can’t lead without being the example. It is vital to respect and value yourself, so you can both earn respect and be respectful.

Whether you are leading or part of the crowd, it is important to respect and value yourself.

Why is it important?

Respecting and valuing yourself makes it possible for you to:

  • Make sound decisions
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Set healthy boundaries
  • Be in service to others
  • Value and respect other people
  • Value self-care

Valuing and respecting yourself is the foundation that builds your self-perceptions. Those motivate you to make the decisions that support your perception of yourself. When you value yourself first, you are coming from a place of love and care. This increases your self-esteem and makes things like self-care easier...and that's what we're all about with A Pilgrimage to Self, my lifestyle coaching program.

 How to get started.

Likely, you already value and respect yourself, but you may not have used those terms to describe it. Let’s look at ways you can identify how much you value and respect yourself:

  • You set healthy boundaries
  • You enjoy your own company
  • You don’t let others bully you
  • You are confident with your decision-making skills
  • You aren’t afraid to speak your mind

If you answered yes to these bullet points, you are well on your way to truly valuing and respecting yourself and most likely value and respect others in return. That’s a great thing!

If you found it difficult or impossible to say yes to any of these points, it’s time to take a look at what you can do to get on track.

  • Journal your thoughts and meditate on why you're not valuing yourself. Ask yourself what’s missing and see what your intuition tells you.
  • Speak to someone who can help you organize your thoughts. A wise mentor, counselor, or church leader.
  • Look at places you may need to extend forgiveness to yourself. Are there areas in your life where you hold blame, shame, or some other fault-finding? Clear the inner air and get yourself back in good-standing with your own heart and mind.

Having value and respect for yourself is a fundamental element of a healthy mind. Knowing your worth and expecting good things for and from yourself is the ultimate act of self-love. Be the best you can be, so you can be the best for others too.
