Being a Responsible Person in Business and Life

Being a Responsible Person in Business and Life

The word responsible means "having an obligation to do something, or having control over or care for someone, as part of one's job or role." It can also be "being the primary cause of something and so able to be blamed or credited for it" or "important duties, independent decision-making, or control of others, capable of being trusted, and morally accountable for one's behavior."

Of course, this could be a good or a bad thing depending upon the circumstances. Have you ever caused something to happen,  and then not taken the responsibility for it?

Many people have done exactly this and have not owned up; they try to skate on by unscathed; however, a person with a winner’s mindset will actually own up and take responsibility. In reality, it is part of human nature to cause things to happen. Sometimes what happens are not intentional acts and you may feel bad over a certain outcome.

Being responsible means that you will own up regardless of the outcome, but this is not always an easy thing to do. Once the outcome has been revealed, it can be difficult to say that you were the cause of it. Acknowledging it is the first step to right action.

As well as being the cause of an issue or circumstance, being responsible also means that you have the power to make things better. When you look at things from this viewpoint, you can see that confessing or owning up may be easier than you think.
You owe it to your family to act responsibly. By doing this, you are teaching your children good habits and you are helping them to accept responsibility for their actions.

Making decisions and choices are also connected to responsibility. It is quite easy to put off making a particular decision because you are worried or fearful of the consequences. There may be other people who will be affected by this decision and by putting it off, you are not helping them or yourself. Not taking action is making a decision, but it isn't living your Intentional Life.

Instead, you need to be responsible to yourself and to others by taking the bull by the horns and making a tough decision. You may not be able to please everyone but you need to make the right choice for you. Make decisions that align with your personal vision for your Intentional Life.

By actually taking action and doing something you are being responsible. Once you have made this decision you need to be strong enough to follow it through. On the way, you may meet with obstacles and roadblocks. You need to hold strong with your conviction and stay with your original decision.

For me, it may mean setting myself up for following through on my exercise routine by preparing my workout clothes, blocking out time, and getting in tune with my intentions and goals. Then, like the Nike commercial says, "Just do it."

Another example of the actions of responsibility can be seen by many employees around the world today. They make a decision to do their job, and then stay with their choice and follow it to an end result. They show up, and they perform at their best.

Taking responsibility for your thoughts, feelings, and actions will allow you to Design an Intentional Life. When you make yourself a priority and focus on your goals and take the right action, you will be on your way to being a very responsible person.
