Are Anxiety, Depression, and Negativity Inhibiting Your Happiness?

Are Anxiety, Depression, and Negative Self-Talk Inhibiting Your Happiness?

It’s becoming easier to get anxious in this fast-paced world filled with craziness and pandemic. People are expected to do more with less. It’s important that we all learn to pivot, look for opportunities and second chances, and take action in the right direction for our lives.

If you are lucky enough to survive a cut back at work, you will be required to take up the slack. Cutbacks mean more work for you and that can give anyone increased anxiety.

A lot of us are shopping online, having groceries delivered to our cars or homes, and making due with what we have on hand. I know that I’ve been cooking with ingredients I’ve had stored in my cupboards and working on projects at home.

As I work with private clients, I hear the stories of anxiety, depression, and negative self-talk. Some clients are also under the care of a therapist and/or doctor. The results they want right now are to feel better, be more in control of their lives, and feel comfortable in their own skin, home, and community.

For some high-strung personalities, they may be tempted to see a doctor for help. Unfortunately, many doctors will simply prescribe drugs to help calm you down. While they may work, this solution may not be the best for you.

Did you know that some doctors may receive kickbacks for prescribing drugs? The situation is even worse now that pharmaceutical companies are pushing drugs. I’m sure you’ve seen the commercials on television. They even go so far as to advertise that people should ask their doctor about the drugs they are selling. Shouldn’t your doctor be the one telling you what is best rather than you suggesting to your doctor what you need? It just seems odd, especially as you listen to the end of the commercials with the list of side effects that are possible.

Drugs should never be the first course of action. There are too many side effects, and it’s often unclear what the long-term effects may be. Society likes to label any condition for the sake of putting yet another drug on people. It’s no wonder abuse of subscription drugs is at an all-time high.

It would be great if doctors would take a more holistic approach and consider the long-term effects of the drugs they are prescribing. They need to take a step back and look at any other medications you may be taking. From my personal experience, my doctors didn’t do this as I was sent from one specialist to another. They tend to treat whatever the condition du jour. It’s easier for them to do this instead of looking at your entire case. It’s also more profitable for them as a holistic approach requires more work, after all.

It’s not fair to peg all doctors as being pill pushers. However, if you discover your doctors are pill-happy whenever you go to see them, you need to evaluate if you have the right doctors. At the very least, don’t accept the diagnosis without asking questions. The first question is whether you need the drugs?

If you want to live a calmer life, try to consider all your options. Have you considered alternative methods of becoming calm, like meditation or massage therapy?

Are you following the philosophy of A House With Four Rooms by doing something daily for your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing?

Have you tried journaling? Do you have a gratitude practice?

What thoughts, feelings, and actions are you having?

There are legitimate reasons for the use of drugs. However, many of us believe it’s always best to let your body do as much of the healing without drugs.

What can you do today to work towards the benefits you’d like in your life?

Until next time...

Lisa
